What you've stumbled upon is an irreverent, biased, and opinionated look at life in South Central Texas' largest city, San Antonio. Topics are whatever I feel like covering on any given morning. Whassup with drivers in Texas? I am a transplant from Boston, and I've lived in NYC and Miami, among other places too numerous to list here. I'm used to driving on snow and icy roads. When I was a sales rep, covering the seven states that most people regard as New England, I was driving about 1500 miles per week, covering a sales territory from New Jersey to Canada, and all points in-between.

Winter here in South Texas is a misnomer. We don't have a "winter" as most people in the United States would categorise it, unless you live well south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Our "winters" consist of mostly 38 degree to 65 degree days, with warmer days in March and April (relatively, being the norm) Our "Storm Tracker" weatherman has not predicted a "storm" in months!

Our weather forecasts in January and February consist of freeze warnings, and dire consequences if overpasses ice over. We had "slippery and icy conditions" one day last year. and everyone stayed home. The one year in the past 15 that San Antonio saw a "real" snowfall (6-8") the city was paralysed!

If you want to escape "real winter", move to San Antonio, with the following caveat:

Drivers in San Antonio are "clueless" when it comes to "iffy" road conditions. It gets "very slippery" due to oil residue on the roads when we've not had any rain for a while. Do Texas drivers here recognise this? NO! They continue speeding along. exceedng the limit on interstate highways, and even on city streets.

I've lived here in S.A. since 1999 now, and I can count on the fingers of one hand, just how many fellow motorists have waved me thru a stop sign. If you live in the N.E. states or CA, I'll bet you can better my record!

In summation, you'll find Texas natives to be really friendly, but beware when they get behind the wheel of their pickup or SUV. They drive too fast, have little regard for road conditions, and do not yield an inch in traffic. Don't believe me? Just click on one of the local news links to the right, and find local "traffic watch" today. You'll see that "drive time" in S.A. is almost as "nutty" as in any major U.S. metropolitan area in states that see major snowfalls, and dangerous driving conditions. The difference is that most San Antonio natives don't recognise when it's time to slow down!

OK, I'll admit to being on the near side of sixty years old, but I'd like to think that I'm perhaps older and wiser. I'd really like to believe that!
