Today, here's a little bit about my part of town. Not so many years ago, this part of the city of San Antonio was largely rural in nature with more pastures than buildings. Now it is home to the South Texas Medical Center, offering some of the finest medical facilities in the USA.

The Medical Services industry is well represented in San Antonio, with the majority of the facilities located in the South Texas Medical Center area. The main facilities of the Center include the University of Texas Health Science Center, as well as nine major hospitals (one of which is a veterans' hospital), two psychiatric rehabilitation hospitals, and two physical rehabilitation centers.

The South Texas Medical Center (STMC) is a "regional leading" research and educational center in San Antonio, Texas.

The Medical Center, which directly serves 38 counties, consists of forty-five medically related institutions; separate medical, dental and nursing schools, three higher educational institutions, twelve hospitals and five specialty institutions.

     The center is the largest medical center in South Texas and the second largest Medical Center in Texas, with 4.42 million outpatient visits in 2006. The center has had a $34 Billion impact on the region.

The center consists of 45 major medical institutions, and is responsible for the $14 Billion biomedical industry thriving in the San Antonio area.
